Originally, this aircraft should be piloted by Elly Beinhorn (please refer to the extra-page) in the contest. Although there is no explicit statement about, it can be deducted from numerous hints. Elly Beinhorn for example writes in her book “Alleinflug (Solo flight)”: “ Professor Heinkel had cabled me, that he wanted to provide me with one of his new machines for the European contest” (p. 198). There are numerous pictures which show the He64 with Elly Beinhorn.

Additionally, she was together with other pilots with the Heinkel in England.

In this picture Elly Beinhorn flies with an interested passenger. For sure can the canopy not be closed considering his size!
Why didn’t se fly in the contest?

My guess:
Because the Messerschmitt M29 was not allowed for the contest (they lost 2 aircraft during the tests), the 2-time-winner of the contest, Fritz Morzik, was suddenly without an aircraft. Because winning the challenge cup 3 times in a row would mean, that the cup would stay in Germany, he had to get a competitive aircraft. So, allegedly, Elly Beinhorn was charmed out of it (Or got the promise for her own aircraft with which she later crossed Africa, the Heinkel He71), and Fritz Morzik took the D-2304 for the European Contest.
Im Wettbewerb

All in all, Fritz Morzik delivered a formidable performance in the contest. He became – with only a few points backlog to the polish winning team around Zwirko second in the overall standings.
As an additional gem, I became aware of a short movieclip showing Morzik and his Heinkel in the contest. Thanks Reinhard Knoblich for digging it out!
